Welcome to the London Latin Jazz Fest 2018!
The quality Latin Jazz that exists in London holds its strength in its fusions, just like this wonderful melting pot city. As the curator of the London Latin Jazz Festival, I'd like to invite you to a trip around the roots and branches of what we know as “Latin Jazz”, a global genre with a heritage as mixed as London's human landscape. This festival brings you the opportunity to experience world-class artists performing passionate, intense music in an up-close, intimate setting.
On Saturday night (DOUBLE SHOW) we have a very special UK exclusive: Cape
Verdean songstress Elida Almeida, whose latest album Kebrada gives Cape Verdean folkloric rhythms such as morna and batuque a Latin tinge. Flying straight in from Cape
Verde, she brings to the festival an evening of warm, heartfelt and enchanting music that will transport you to sunny shores.
On Friday night (DOUBLE SHOW), Roberto Pla, the Godfather of Latin Music in the UK returns to the London Latin Jazz Festival with his Latin Ensemble, performing an array of Fania-style arrangements alongside a 13-piece line-up comprising some of the UK's top jazz and Latin musicians. Plenty of bountifully arranged boogaloo, salsa and cha cha cha!
I'll be opening the festival on the Tuesday alongside an array of London's top Cuban and jazz musicians with a journey across a spectrum of Afro-Cuban inspired jazz/soul stories about love, migration and healing, sung by vocalist Sahra Gure and an array of very special guests. An elegant yet fiery set, expect some reflectiveness but also a lot of dancing!
On Thursday night, Cuban trumpet player Yelfris Valdés's quintet will be performing works from his latest album, The World of Eshu Dina, a profoundly spiritual conversation between Cuban music, jazz and modern soundscapes; and on Wednesday night, the UK's top Venezuelan musicians join forces under the direction of award-winning percussionist Ernesto Marichales to provide a journey through Afro-Venezuelan folk and folk-jazz fusions.
